FLARE

Today went to watch Flare the theatrical performance. Rushed to dhoby ghaut mrt station from tuition in Bukit Gombak.

Waited for a while over there and lyk no one there yet. Then later found out they are inside the station, then I was forced to re-enter the station. Wasted 45 cents =.=. Later then walked to gallery theatre of national museum.

Ok the show was from 3pm onwards. Here is the show:

Flare was inspired from the Peter Shaffer's psychological drama EQUUS, Flare is a narrative kaleidoscope exploring desperation and escape.

The first part of the show was set in a village. The characters were represented by puppetry. This part of the show mainly talks about a boy which is fascinated with horses( Think of Euquus and Daniel Radcliffe) and he finds a man that shares his interest. After which the man asks a magical horse to kill him. The boy is very upset and asks the horse to use his own magical power to kill the horse himself. The horse then dies and the village has an earthquake.

In the second part of the show, there is an elderly man and his wife leading a peaceful life. One day, the man goes down to buy bread for his wife. He is confronted by two horse-frog(dunno wad is that) and he dies. After that, his wife is seriously affected and has illusions of earthquakes everyday. Her daughter then distracts her by taking her on shopping trips, going on facebook, getting the house repainted etc. When the man comes back,he cannot ever find his original wife again but finds one being IT savvy, acting young etc. The story ends with a sad tone.

In the third part of the story, a bitchy-slutty woman (kudos to the actress, this kind of stuff is a real challenge to the actress. Normal acting will not satisfy the audience. You really need to be in the state of mind) tries to seduce a cop by making poses and throwing herself at the cop blahblahblah, the cop is pissed off by her actions. Result: so funny. But the woman is actually traumatised by the fact that her husband has a woman outside, and so she makes herself like that. When the cop is gone, she talks and confides with a red horse. The story ends with her separating with her husband .

In the last part of the story, a woman is obsessed with horse betting and she even goes to the extent of buying a horse( a big big metal shiny horse is made for this, kudos to the backstage people) from the turf club to bred and send to horse-racing. Her son tries to stop all this, but to no avail. The woman is slowly dragged into mental instability and crazy-ness with the horse. She starts illusioning the horse is a god and when the god dies, the woman becomes mad. There is an earthquake at the mental hospital.

The show ends.

Now I will explain why the horse appears in evry part of the show. The horse represents a death-god messenger in mythical stories. When a person dies, there will be 2 horses bringing that person and judging the person. The horse is included in every part of the show in different colours or shapes. In the first part, the horse is represented by a human actor, unlike others which is represented by puppetry. In the third part, the horse is in red, which may signify lust or smth liddat because the man has a mistress. It also shows that death is not that scary, compared to the stories that is so sad bt yet can happen in our lives.

Why the earthquakes then? The earthquake is 地震 in chinese, which is "rubbling earth". It is included because the characters are being sort of "waken up" or shaken up by the events to live their lives.(震醒) It also makes us wonder why do we only realise the most important things in dire situations and take out compassions in our hearts. An example is the quite recent Si Chuan Earthquake in China.

Overall a very nice show, but quite difficult to understand at first, especially if this is the first time you are watching a drama performance.

And till then,signing off...
